Portrait of Omar ibn Sa'id (1770-1864)
A portrait of Al Haj Omar ibn Sa'id (1770-1864). Born in present-day Senegal, he was taken to the U.S. as a slave due to a military conflict, and remained so until the end of his life. While enslaved, he wrote a number of works in theology, history, and a famous autobiography. He was buried in North Carolina. (Courtesy of Davidson College Archives)
